Who are you about to haul for?
In an Overdrive survey of 500-plus owner-operators and small fleets, half had been stiffed for a whole load. Before you book, check the number they gave you against the federal record—it takes a minute and it catches the most common freight fraud there is.
What this tells you, and what it does not
- It tells you whether the entity exists, what name it is registered under, whether it is authorised to operate right now, how big it says it is, and whether it has been put out of service.
- It does not tell you whether they will pay you. Authority is a licence, not a credit score. A broker can be perfectly authorised and still be sixty days late.
- The number one check: does the name and address on the record match the company that just called you? Double brokering usually falls apart right there.
Data comes from the public FMCSA register. It is their record, not our judgement, and it can lag reality by a few days. Terms worth knowing: MC number, operating authority, double brokering.
