Lower legal weights posted on thawing roads, commonly between February and May in northern states.
In moneyA load legal in January can be overweight on the same road in March.
What to doCheck the state's posted restrictions before you route a heavy load through in spring.
When frozen roads thaw, the roadbed softens, and states and counties post lower weight limits on vulnerable roads. There is no federal rule; each state sets its own.
Restrictions can be posted at short notice and lifted just as fast. The states that commonly post them include Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Montana and much of the Northeast.
