A per-mile tax on New York miles, with a decal on the truck. A trip certificate covers the occasional run.
Who needs it
Vehicles over 18,000 lbs gross weight on New York public highways. The threshold is the lowest of the four and catches a lot of equipment people assume is exempt.
How you get it
Get a HUT certificate and decal from the New York Department of Taxation and Finance, then file periodically. A trip certificate covers occasional entries.
The part that catches people
Two separate things: the HUT decal and, for some vehicles, a separate permit. Also note New York runs its own thruway tolls on top — the tax is not the toll.
