Miles you run empty to get to a load or get home.
Deadhead burns fuel, hours and tyres and earns nothing. It is the most under-counted cost in small-carrier economics because it does not appear on any rate confirmation.
A load is only as good as the deadhead it takes to reach it. Fifty empty miles to a well-paying load is fine; three hundred usually is not.
