Bill of lading

The document that describes the freight and acts as the receipt for it.

It records what was loaded, in what condition, and who is responsible for it. Signed at pickup and again at delivery.

Note damage or a short count on the BOL at the time, not afterwards. A clean signed BOL says you accepted the freight as described.
